Mariton: Protecting White Ash Trees

July 24, 2018

by Tim Burris, Preserve Manager

Tom Levendusky and I recently put Tubex tubes on the stump sprouts of white ash. You may remember that these trees were cut preemptively during the winter because of Emerald Ash Borer, which is killing ash trees in the region.  Most of the stumps re-sprouted vigorously.   I was quite pleased to see the re-growth, and I guess the deer were pleased also, because they started browsing the stems.  The tubes will protect the root suckers, at least from the deer.

You can see that there are several root suckers on this stump.  We protected the one that looked healthiest, and will watch to see how the others fare.
