Mariton: Blue-headed Vireo
by Tim Burris, Preserve Manager. Photos by Carole Mebus.
On Tuesday, we came across a small flock of Blue-headed Vireos. This individual stayed still for quite some time, while the rest of the flock kept moving around. The white eye ring or “spectacles”, and the blue-gray head are quite attractive. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one where the yellow on the sides showed up so well. Perhaps it was just because this one sat so still. If you have an older field guide, this was formerly known as the Solitary Vireo. It still has solitary in its Latin name: Vireo solitarius.
