Mariton: Birding in Bucks

June 6, 2018

by Tim Burris, Preserve Manager.  Photos by Carole Mebus.

Red-headed Woodpecker

We returned to a prime spot in northern Bucks County for the last bird walk of the series. This is a place where we expect to find Red-headed Woodpeckers.  The habitat also provides for other sightings including Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Orioles, and Blue-winged Warblers.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

This male Ruby-throated Hummingbird perched above the trail on this snag for quite some time for everyone to see.

Eastern Wood Pewee

Eastern Wood Pewees were singing.  This is a great snag for a flycatcher to proclaim its territory and occasionally fly off to capture some food.

Always something new to discover.

Carole took this photo of a Baltimore Oriole nest. It wasn’t until she looked at the photo at home that she realized the female was in the photo also.  It is Nature’s surprises that get us up in the morning and outside.  There is always something new to discover, and you can’t find these things by staying inside.  In my mind, Carole’s photo captures the fun and excitement of our weekly walks.  Someone always sees something new, and that motivates all of us to keep looking, learning and discovering.
