Crow’s Nest: Boardwalk upgrade

September 27, 2019

By Daniel Barringer, Preserve Manager.

This week Aubrey Smith replaced the rotted boards on our first boardwalk along the Creek Trail. This boardwalk dates to the mid-1990’s and still has its original black locust and recycled plastic lumber base. But the deck boards are untreated white oak which lasts a while but not forever. I think these new boards represent the 4th or 5th generation of decking in the course of 20 years.

We’ve made major improvements in the Creek Trail over the last couple months, including a new Eagle Scout project bridge to replace a broken culvert, gravel to give traction in wet spots, and lots of pruning to keep the trail from growing closed. (It has also helped that the extreme volume of rain we had earlier in the season has slacked off.) We hope you enjoy using this trail along French Creek!
