Mariton: Wood Turtle

June 16, 2012

by Tim Burris, Preserve Manager

We came across this Wood Turtle (Clemmys insculpta) on the Butterfly Walk earlier this week.  I might not call Wood Turtles rare, but the last time I saw one was probably 10 years ago.  These beautiful turtles are very terrrestrial.  While they are often found near water, they are quite comfortable wandering far from water.  This turtle was easily a 1/2 mile from the nearest water.  Carole Mebus took these turtle portraits.
