The Rhododendrons at Mariton are just beginning to bloom. Now many people may be thinking, “Mine bloomed a month ago”. Yes, but those aren’t the native Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum). Cultivated rhodies are beautiful and add color to the yard, but you should take a close look at a native rhododendron.
Take a look at the specimens at Mariton that are likely 100 years old. Then look into a blossom and see the stunning simplicityof its beauty. Stand back and look at a hillside covered with the deep green foliage, and the white blossoms. After you do that, maybe you’ll understand my preference for the native rhodie.
