Mariton: Rain, Rain Go Away

October 1, 2011

Mariton’s year-to-date precipitation has now reached 66.13 inches!  That is a lot of moisture.  We haven’t reached the record (15 years of data) yet, but it is only a matter of time.  The wettest year was 2003 when we received 66.56 inches of precipitation.

The month of September ended with 14.63 inches of rain.  That is more than twice the average for the month (6.46 inches).  Believe it or not, but this September is not the record.  In 2004, we received 14.88 inches of rain during September.  Of course, in 2004 we were graced by Tropical Storm Frances, Hurricane Ivan, and Tropical Storm Jeanne.

Normally, precipitation will average itself out in a 12 month period.  With that in mind, we could theoretically go the next three months without a drop of rain, or flake of snow.  However, I am beginning to think that 2011 is not a normal year.  (How much snow could be produced by 14.63 inches of rain?)
