Local Events: Bikes, Stars, and Charcoal

August 1, 2012

There are a bunch of local events going on over the next couple months. At Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site (next to our Crow’s Nest Preserve) this Saturday, August 4 is Establishment Day. At 11:00 come and see the annual lighting of the charcoal pile and honor those who kept the furnace operating from 1771-1883.

Also at Hopewell Furnace, the following Saturday, August 11, Chesmont Astronomical Society will hold a Star Fest featuring a talk by Dr. H. John Wood of NASA’s Goddard Space Center followed by star watching through many telescopes. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, and even a picnic dinner. The event runs 4:00 to 11:oo pm (come for some or all) and is free of charge.

There are two local biking events related to nature and farming coming up in September: On September 22 the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area will offer a ride along the Schuylkill Trail from Pottstown to Birdsboro. There will be a presentation about the railroad upon which the trail is now based, plus side trips to three historic villages along the way.

The following day, September 23 there is the 5th annual Bike Fresh Bike Local tour that is a fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture. Choose from 25, 50 an 75-mile courses that roam through the Chester County countryside.
