Volunteer – Love our trees, please

May 5, 2023 | 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Woman in field with tree tube

Love nature and want to lend her a helping hand? Grab gloves and join fellow volunteers in straightening tree tubes and cutting invasive vines to nurture young trees. Good fun (and dirt) is guaranteed! Natural Lands cares for more than 23,000 acres and 120 miles of trails, and we couldn’t do it without volunteers like you.

Volunteering with Natural Lands is a great way to learn more about the natural world, give your time to a great cause, and connect with enthusiastic, like-minded people.

The health and safety of staff and volunteers is our highest priority during this volunteer event. Please review “before you go” details.

Capacity is limited for this small-group event. If you sign-up, please show up. If you need to cancel, please let us know so another volunteer can attend. All are welcome, ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

When

May 5, 2023
9:00am - 11:30am

Peacedale Preserve includes two streams that flow into Big Elk Creek, which in turn leads to the Chesapeake Bay. The property also contains vast expanses of woodlands and hayfields, some of which are being restored to native grass meadows. The preserve, comprised of several parcels of land acquired over many decades, is a wonderful example of just how long-term the work of land conservation can be.

What to wear and expect:

  • Dress for the season and wear sturdy boots to trek uneven, potentially muddy terrain
  • Wear long pants and long sleeved shirt to protect against thorns, brambles and insects. No shorts, please.
  • Poison ivy is present; leaders will point it out.
  • Ticks and bugs are possible, bugspray recommended.
  • Plan to get dirty, and have fun!
  • Sorry, dogs are not permitted at this event.
  • There are no restrooms at this location. Please plan accordingly.

What to bring:

  • Bring your own work gloves.
  • Bring steel-head sledgehammer (1.5 – 2 pounds), hand pruners, and/or long-handled loppers, if you have them (tools will also be available to borrow).
  • Bring a large, FULL water bottle to stay hydrated. You may wish to bring a trail snack, too.

Please help us all stay safe:

  • If you are sick or feeling unwell, please stay home.
  • Masking is optional. The CDC recommends masking for those who are at high risk for getting very sick when COVID-19 Community Levels are at Medium and for everyone when COVID-19 Community Levels are at High. People may choose to mask at any time.
