Crow’s Nest: Creature in the pasture
By Daniel Barringer, Preserve Manager
I found this “creature” in the cattle pasture the other morning and I had to go see what it was.
It’s a mylar lobster and some regular helium balloons. Luckily this pasture doesn’t have steers in it right now. Steers are naturally curious, and they tend to experience the world by sampling it with their mouths. The ribbons and balloons would likely be fatal if ingested.
The same may also be true for wildlife. Balloons that get away become trash. A couple years ago my colleague Tim Burris blogged about mylar balloons being a pet peeve of his. If they are released they no longer commemorate a special occasion and they become someone else’s problem.
It’s okay to party, but let’s be careful out there.
