each of us can make a difference
Whether we have access to a front stoop, acres of land, or anything in between, we can give nature a helping hand. A few key actions can make any space a mini nature preserve.
small actions, big impact
We can no longer rely only on protected open spaces, like parks and nature preserves, to support life on Earth. When we make the right choices for the land under our influence, we can be part of taking good care of our planet.
plant native
What’s beautiful, low maintenance, and essential to the native insects that keep life on Earth humming along? Native trees, shrubs, and perennials, that’s what. Even if you’re not a gardener, adding these to the space around you supports the natural world that supports us all. The smallest commitment is the right place to start.
plants to know and growremove invasives
Many of us have inherited (or accidentally planted) invasive plants. These exotic plants spread easily and monopolize sunlight, nutrients, water, and space to the detriment of other species. Wind, water, and wildlife carry seeds into our neighbors’ yards or natural areas many miles away. Removing them is a great first step. Even better, replace them with a beautiful and beneficial native plant species
great replacementsleave the leaves
Getting lazy in the fall is one of the best ways to promote biodiversity right in your neighborhood. Put the rake away (or use it sparingly) so that the leaves can slowly break down and return nutrients to the soil. You’ll be protecting the insects that may be cocooned in them. Fireflies, for example, lay their larvae to overwinter in leaf litter. Plus, spreading leaves in natural areas and garden bed makes perfect mulch.
