Woodland Spider Lily

Hymenocallis occidentalis

Spider lilies are hands down one of the most magnificent wildflowers in eastern North America. Most species prefer the warmer southern states, but woodland spider lily ranges further north and is perfectly hardy here – lucky for us! The flowers are not named because they attract spiders – it would be really cool if they did – but instead because the strappy white petals radiate out like the delicate legs of some ethereal arachnid. This plant is not easy to find, but please keep in mind that boggy, moist, or wet soil is needed for this one to really thrive.

Conditions: Sun to part shade; moist to wet soil
Size: 18″ – 24″ tall and wide
Zone: 5 – 8
Wildlife Value: The flowers are visited by the ruby throated hummingbird
