White Turtlehead

Chelone glabra ‘Black Ace’

This selection of White Turtlehead has a moody black cast to its dark foliage when it emerges from the earth in spring. The leaves eventually lighten to a dark green as the hot summer sets in, just before the clusters of large, white flowers emerge, clinging to the tips of each stem in late summer. ‘Black Ace’ looks particularly stunning where its blooms can sing in a late afternoon shade against an evergreen backdrop.

Conditions: Part sun (can handle full sun with adequate moisture); moist to wet soils
Size: 3′ – 4′ tall, 3′ – 4′ spread
Zone: 3 – 8
Wildlife Value: Host plant for Baltimore Checkerspot, Turtlehead Borer Moth, and Verbena Bud Moth; flowers provide nectar for butterflies, bumble bees, and other pollinators
