Ostrich Fern
Matteuccia struthiopteris
Ostrich Fern is an excellent choice when tasked with a larger wet shady place to fill. Planting along stream banks will aid in soil stabilization while providing cover for small mammals. One of the more commonly foraged foods, the fiddle heads that emerge in spring appear on many menus through the region. Fronds unfurl to a stately vase shape. If planted in correct conditions, the lush green leaves will stay until frost where soon after they transform into a sturdy, winter-arrangement-worthy dried leaf.
