Eastern Red Columbine

Aquilegia canadensis ‘Little Lanterns’

This dwarf columbine cultivar is small but mighty, featuring bright, ferny foliage and striking red and yellow blooms that are more intensely colored than the straight species. Plant in a woodland garden for a pop of color in April and May. If happy, this plant will self-seed (but not aggressively) and grace your garden with a small colony of color among shade. This diminutive delight can be grown in full sun if given adequate moisture.

Conditions: Part shade to full shade; moist, humus-rich soils with good drainage
Size: 10″ tall
Zone: 3 – 8
Wildlife Value: Nectar source for hummingbirds on their northern migration; flowers attracts long-tongued insects, including hawk moths; primary host plant for the Columbine Duskywing Butterfly and Pink-patched Looper Moth
