Cup Plant
Silphium perfoliatum
Don’t mistake this for a sunflower. Cup Plant is a tall and robust perennial with bright yellow flowers that can’t be missed. Pairs of opposite leaves clasp its uniquely square stem, creating little “cups” for water to collect, providing a drink for insects and birds. Cup Plant grows quite vigorously when in ideal conditions, spreading by seed and through underground root systems. If given the space it deserves, it will return the favor by providing beauty and habitat for years to come.
