Buttonbush

Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘Magical Moonlight’

In the wild, Buttonbush is most often found near wetlands and bogs, but luckily for us, this fabulous shrub is adaptable to many soil conditions. Round, white, alien spaceship-like flower heads bloom in early summer and are highly attractive to pollinators of all sorts, especially butterflies. Later in summer, these flowers give way to large, red showy fruits, and maybe even a second flush of flowers. ‘Magical Moonlight’ is a compact cultivar that allows gardeners with spaces of all sizes to include this magical plant.

Conditions: Full sun to partial shade; average to moist soil
Size: 5″ –  8″ tall
Zone: 5 – 9
Wildlife Value: Flowers highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; fruit attractive to birds; larval host for Cecropia, Hydrangea Sphinx, and Connubial Underwing moths
