At Trellis for Tomorrow we are crazy about this world. Bonkers. Nuts. And not just about this planet, but everybody who lives on it, too. We want to see it last, and even get better, which is why we are working hard to get people to think about—or rethink— their relationship with the environment and with each other, and to shift the focus toward fresh, innovative and creative solutions for our most pressing challenges.
We are working to flip the script on the unsustainable practices and systems in our society which are contributing toward a damaged environment and limited possibilities for growth, to breathe fresh life into the conversation about our future, and we need your help!
Trellis for Tomorrow is now accepting applications for our 2019 summer Youth Environmental Stewardship Crew Leader. This position is reserved for daring, enthusiastic, creative, forward-thinking, bold, hopeful, passionate, community-minded individuals who aren’t afraid to go the extra mile, get their hands dirty and/or lead by example. It also helps if you believe: a) this world is worth saving, b) it can be saved and, c) you might have unrealized superpowers to help save it (just kidding.…or are we?).
The Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) is in partnership with Natural Lands and is a conservation-focused internship designed to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. YES engages motivated young adults to complete challenging, impactful and much needed conservation and service projects in Chester County. Trellis for Tomorrow’s programs focus on place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. YES also provides an opportunity for Crew Members to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers. The Crew Leader will be responsible for assisting in leading youth in the day-to-day activities of YES projects.
Hours and Salary:
Dates are June 24 to July 26 (possibly to Aug 2). Work will be Monday through Friday. Approximately 20 hours on site, plus time allowed for planning and preparation; a maximum of 25 hours per week in total. Schedule of work will be made in advance by the Program Director. This is a part-time, seasonal position with the potential for continuation depending on program needs. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
YES Crew Leaders are responsible for:
- Preparing, mentoring, and leading a 10-12-person crew in day-to-day activities of YES project work.
- Facilitating teamwork and guiding crew dynamics.
- Training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship.
- Ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects by communicating with Trellis for Tomorrow, partners and sponsors.
- Recording and reporting important weekly project outcome data and other documentation.
- Monitor, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety at the work site.
- Transportation of crew members via the Trellis van.
- Upholding a positive representation of Trellis, exhibiting Trellis values, and ensuring that Trellis policies and procedures are followed. This includes creating a substance free work environment, i.e. no use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs.
Specific projects will be dictated by our program partner, but some of the opportunities may include the following:
- Trail maintenance, improvement, and construction.
- Invasive species removal.
- Tree planting and re-vegetation.
- Habitat improvement/restoration.
- Local environmental service projects.
- Special projects, potentially including woodcock (a species of concern) habitat improvement.
Applicants will be expected to be able to work independently. A good work ethic, excellent communication and organizational skills, and attention to detail, are required. Priority will be given to those with previous experience in conservation and youth leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience.
- Experience working with youth.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Critical thinking skills and the ability to resolve issues and solve problems.
- Strong situational awareness and the ability to promote a culture of safety.
- Driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Have own vehicle.
- Must pass FBI & State Criminal Background checks and Child Abuse History clearance.
