Women on Trail: Solo, Safe, and Strong

October 15, 2022 | 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

A small, misty waterfall going through rocks with the woods in the background.

Start off on the right foot by hiking the Bear Creek Preserve with wilderness skills instructor Weavre Molina. You’ll learn basic safety, Leave No Trace ethics, map reading, and other solo hiking skills while walking together through our very own boots-on-dirt classroom.

With a short hike and multiple stops for discussion and practice, no one will be left behind. This intro-level workshop is intended for new hikers, but experienced outdoorspeople are welcome – and might just learn something new as well!

*This event welcomes all women, regardless of their assigned gender at birth.

UPDATE:

The turnpike will be closed the weekend of this event. Click here for more information: https://www.paturnpike.com/news/details/2022/10/06/pennsylvania-turnpike-plans-weekend-closure-between-lehigh-valley-and-mahoning-valley-interchanges

Here is the suggested detour for NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC:

Exit at Lehigh Valley Exit #56 and take U.S. Route 22 East to State Route 33 North (16.5 miles).  Follow State Route 33 North to Interstate 80 West (24.5 miles).

Do not continue on to the turnpike. Take Exit 284 towards Blakeslee off I-80W, keeping right at the fork to get on 115N. They’ll then reach the Bear Creek Preserve in about 10 miles.

This may add about a 22 minute addition to your travel:

Bear Creek Preserve is a vast expanse of forests and steep stream valleys in the Lehigh River Watershed. Larger than many state parks, the preserve is a mosaic of diverse, thriving habitats and plant communities, including several rare species. The land provides vital habitat for native wildlife, including black bear, coyote, Bald Eagle, and many species of migratory songbirds. Bear Creek Preserve is part of a larger landscape of protected lands and popular recreation areas, including state parks and gamelands, that spans more than 150,000 acres.
