Wild Weeds

July 22, 2023 | 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Dandelion-like flowers of coltsfoot in early spring

Who knew there were so many really cool plants growing right at our feet, even in populated places? Join instructor Weavre Molina as she leads you on an easy wildflower ID class. You will see wonders growing all around you every time you park your car and smile at the stories and uses of the tenacious “weeds” that share your world.

Accessible to people who can walk on a level parking lot, even using a cane or walker, and mostly accessible to someone who can use a wheelchair in a rough parking lot. In fact, bring a lightweight camp chair if you like; we’ll pause enough for you to be able to sit, look, and chat about the plants growing right where we are!

*Note: No mobility assistance or medical supervision will be provided, other than staying in a more accessible location fairly close to your vehicle. If you need help to use an assistive device, please bring a companion.

When

July 22, 2023
10:00am - 1:00pm

Bear Creek Preserve is a vast expanse of forests and steep stream valleys in the Lehigh River Watershed. Larger than many state parks, the preserve is a mosaic of diverse, thriving habitats and plant communities, including several rare species. The land provides vital habitat for native wildlife, including black bear, coyote, Bald Eagle, and many species of migratory songbirds. Bear Creek Preserve is part of a larger landscape of protected lands and popular recreation areas, including state parks and gamelands, that spans more than 150,000 acres.

Before you go:

  • Meet at the red kiosk in the parking lot.
  • Accessible to people who can walk on a level parking lot, even using a cane or walker, and mostly accessible to someone who can use a wheelchair in a rough parking lot
  • Dress for the weather, note that the preserve is noticeably cooler than many other places.
  • Snack and water (at least 2 liters)
  • Porta potties will be available.
  • Please leave your four-legged friends at home. Service animals welcome.

Help us all stay safe:

  • If you are sick, please stay home
  • Masking is optional. The CDC recommends masking for those who are at high risk for getting very sick when COVID-19 Community Levels are at Medium and for everyone when COVID-19 Community Levels are at High. People may choose to mask at any time.
