When woodcocks come out to display, spring is on the way! In February and March, the normally secretive male American Woodcocks emerge at dusk to perform a spectacular mating display. Flying high into the sky, they whirl down in circles and “peent” to attract a female.

Natural Lands staff members will be watching out for woodcocks in Gwynedd’s lowland woods, where the birds use their long bills to probe the soil for earthworms.

Sign up for this Pop-up Timberdoodling event, and we’ll email you when woodcocks are in action. Be ready to seize a short-notice opportunity to witness this remarkable avian display, and learn why they’re called timberdoodles!

Gwynedd Preserve is an oasis of nature nestled among the highly developed suburbs of Blue Bell and North Wales. After more than a century in agriculture, the preserve’s fields are being carefully restored. A walk along the trails reveals a re-emerging ecosystem of native plants including warm-season grasses and wildflowers.

The meadow and forest habitats here are particularly important because they are connected to other preserved lands in the Wissahickon Creek watershed. The entire 26-mile length of the riparian corridor of the Wissahickon Creek greenway is protected by private landowners and conservation organizations, as well as township and state entities.

Natural Lands will send all registered participants an email with event details once date and time are determined. Event is subject to conditions and staffing, and may not necessarily coincide with the first sighting of woodcocks.

Event may be held in February or March, on a weekday or weekend, starting around 5:00 pm. You may only receive 1 to 2 days notice; join us if you can!

Dress warmly for cold winter evenings.

Bring binoculars if you’d like, though they may not be useful in low-light.

Please leave your four-legged friends at home.
