Deep Woods, Awesome Birds
Bear Creek Preserve | Fri, May 18, 2018, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Thrushes, tanagers, warblers, and many other colorful songbirds fly through our region during the peak of spring migration. In May, their songs echo sweetly through the trees, serenading preserve visitors.
Join us on this search for songbirds along the mountaintop trails of our picturesque Bear Creek Preserve, which encompasses more than 3,500 pristine acres in the Lehigh River watershed. We’ll look for colorful Scarlet Tanagers in the canopy, and listen for the flute-like melody of singing Wood Thrushes. Learn how healthy ecosystems support these and other bird species.
Bear Creek Preserve is a vast expanse of forests and steep stream valleys in the Lehigh River Watershed. Larger than many state parks, the preserve is a mosaic of diverse, thriving habitats and plant communities, including several rare species. The land provides vital habitat for native wildlife, including black bear, coyote, Bald Eagle, and many species of migratory songbirds. Bear Creek Preserve is part of a larger landscape of protected lands and popular recreation areas, including state parks and gamelands, that spans more than 150,000 acres.
No experience necessary. Meet at the Preserve Center promptly at 9:00 AM. Dress in seasonal layers and wear sturdy boots for walking rugged trails. Bring a bottle of water and binoculars. Pack a lunch, and picnic with us afterwards. Please leave your four-legged friends at home.
