Brunch with Bald Eagles

Bryn Coed Preserve | Sun, May 03, 2020, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Bald Eagles mate for life and many breeding pairs will use the same nest every year, sometimes for 30 years or more.

Eagles’ nests are quite large, typically at least five to six feet in diameter and three or more feet deep. Each year, the birds will add sticks to the nest. The largest one ever recorded measured nine feet wide and six feet deep!

Members will be viewing the nest of a breeding pair of Bald Eagles that has been at Bryn Coed for several years, using scopes for a close-up view, then enjoy a light brunch.

In 2017, Natural Lands acquired a 1,505-acre mosaic of forest and farmland known as Bryn Coed—which means “wooded hill” in Welsh. In doing so, we saved one of the largest remaining unprotected swaths of land in the greater Philadelphia region from becoming a housing development.

The preserve includes a Pennsylvania Champion white oak, the headwaters of the Pickering Creek, and several Bald Eagle nesting spots. Miles of hiking trails meander past 19th century stone farmhouses, historical ruins, and other remnants of the land’s agricultural past.

Please note: a portion of the trails traverse private property. Please respect the owners’ privacy and stay on the trails.

  • This is a members-only event; you can buy your membership and event tickets below.
  • Bald Eagles are extremely sensitive to human disturbance, so it is important to avoid going near an eagle’s nest.
  • Birders of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them (a few will be available to borrow).
  • Dress for the season and wear sturdy shoes.
  • Please leave your four-legged friends at home.
