Autumn Avian Delights

Gwynedd Preserve | Sat, October 13, 2018, 9:00am - 11:30am

Each autumn, raptors and songbirds flock across forests and fields, following age-old instincts to fly south for the winter.

Expansive fields, wetlands, and woodlands sustain a variety of avian species at this picturesque preserve. Bring your binoculars and join Natural Lands staffer Debbie Beer for a guided bird walk. We’ll look for migratory and resident birds, including kestrels, harriers, sparrows, and bluebirds.

Gwynedd Preserve is an oasis of nature nestled among the highly developed suburbs of Blue Bell and North Wales. After more than a century in agriculture, the preserve’s fields are being carefully restored. A walk along the trails reveals a re-emerging ecosystem of native plants including warm-season grasses and wildflowers.

The meadow and forest habitats here are particularly important because they are connected to other preserved lands in the Wissahickon Creek watershed. The entire 26-mile length of the riparian corridor of the Wissahickon Creek greenway is protected by private landowners and conservation organizations, as well as township and state entities.

  • Birders of all experience levels are welcome.
  • We’ll walk one to two miles at leisurely pace.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and seasonal layers.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them; a few will be available to borrow.
  • Please leave your four-legged friends at home.
